November 2011 - a letter from the International Adviser

Dear Friends

I hope that the Summer has gone well for all the members of your Guild despite the weather not coming up to scratch?  By now you must be into the new season of Trefoil Guild meetings and Christmas is not very far away.

I recently received a letter from the Chair of the Musselburgh Trefoil Guild containing a cheque amounting to £120.00 with a request to send it on to W.A.G.G.G.S. at the World Bureau as a donation to the Girls Global Fund.  The Guild actually raised £190.00 in total but £50.00 of this was given to a young Guider in their area who was going to an International Camp.   I thought perhaps you would be interested to know how they raised the money.

The Musselburgh Chairperson wanted to challenge all the members to do a “personal 5p a day for 100 days’ challenge with the weekends off!”  Each member was given a labelled ‘International’ yoghurt pot to take home. Five pence a day for five days amounted to 25p per week, £1.00 per four weeks and in five months each member would have saved £5.00.  Whilst doing this each member was encouraged to think of others all over the world that need their help – this way they were all involved for a fairly long time which proved how a little can mean a lot!  The Guild members also “discovered that – in the 1920’s 5p or 1/- would pay their annual subs in the Circle of Older Guides – or in 1943 would buy 3 pints of milk (4d. Each pint) or half a gallon of petrol (2/- a gallon) or 4 stamps (tuppence hapnae’ or 21/2d.each) with 2d. change.  To someone in a third world country today, 5p could be a meal.”  In addition to the £120.00 a member donated a further £80.00.  I was very pleased to be able to send £200.00 onto W.A.G.G.G.S. on their behalf.
Please find under 'Events' more International News for you to pass on to your members.

Yours sincerely

WESTMINSTER ABBEY SERVICE

On Saturday 5th November 2011 Girlguiding UK in partnership with The Scout Association held a Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey for members of both movements who had been recipients of Long Service brooches or Association Awards.
Invitations were received by 250 members of Guiding and a similar number from Scouting and each was accompanied by a guest. Girlguiding Scotland members received 25 invitations and included several from the Trefoil Guild.
The Service was conducted by The Very Reverend Dr. John Hall, Dean of Westminster, assisted by The Reverend Mary Harewood, Associate Priest, West Downland Benefice.
During the Service 2 Scouts and 2 Guides gave a very personal interview on how having good leaders had enabled them to enjoy so many adventures and that leadership had inspired them to become leaders of the future.
The very inspirational address was given by The Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkins, a Jamaican, and Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.
Everyone present found it a very moving experience.

Living the Promise

Isobel MacGregor, recently county TG chairman, Glasgow, completed chemo & radiotherapy treatment 2 weeks before achieving the Moon Walk in Edinburgh in June! She did the half-marathon, raising £1000 for the breast cancer charity "WalktheWalk" uniting against breast cancer. Her daughter Sheila Smith, now living in Aberdeen and treasurer of a Friends of Guiding group there, did the full marathon, raising over £500 for the charity. Sheila was a Queen's Guide in Glasgow and also had her Patrol Leaders Camp Permit and used it.
We in Glasgow are very proud of these achievements
.
            Well done, Isobel!
